Module 02 — The Store, Graded

The most famous name in golf.
A store that buries its own inventory.

We audited sundayred.com the way we audit every enterprise store: page by page, claim by claim, with the receipts attached. What we found is not a traffic problem — it is a conversion problem, and most of it is fixable in weeks, not quarters.

Store Health Score

A C-grade store wearing an A-plus brand.

How we scored it. Seven areas graded from direct observation, letter grades mapped to points (A = 95, B = 80, C = 60, D = 40, ±5 per notch), then revenue-weighted: Merchandising 20%, PDP 20%, SEO Hygiene 20%, Cart & Checkout 15%, Email/SMS 10%, Trust & Policy 10%, Content Ops 5%. Composite: 57.5 → 58/100.

Performance and Site Search are excluded from the composite — both were unobservable remotely (API rate-limit; robots-blocked) and are graded Pending until we run them live in the meeting. If Core Web Vitals fail, this score drops.

The Grade Board

Nine areas. Every grade earned by observation.

All findings below were captured on August 1, 2026 from rendered page fetches of sundayred.com. Nothing is assumed; anything we could not see is marked pending.

D

Merchandising & Stock

40/100 · weight 20%
  • 6 of the first 8 products on /men/tops/polos/ are flagged "Out of Stock" directly on the collection grid — Icon Polo II, Crosswind, Stripe Polo II, The Cardinal, Grrrid Pique, Core Polo. Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • OOS items hold top grid positions under the default "Best Match" sort — dead inventory is merchandised first on the money category.
  • Hero product Icon Polo II is unbuyable in all 7 colors on its PDP. Site crawl, Aug 2026

Why it matters: /men/tops/polos/ is a top-3 organic entry page (~3,694 visits/mo Semrush, Jul 2026). Every visitor — and every paid click — landing on a wall of sold-out product is spend converted directly into bounce.

C-

PDP Conversion

55/100 · weight 20%
  • Zero reviews or ratings — no stars, counts, or testimonials anywhere on the Icon Polo II PDP, on a $115 product. Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • No BNPL merchandising — Klarna Pay in 4 is live at checkout ($35–$1,000 carts) but no "4 payments of $28.75" line appears on the PDP. sundayred.com/klarna.html
  • Hero product state is "AVAILABLE SOON" + Join Waitlist — good OOS capture pattern, but it is the default experience on the flagship polo.
  • Shipping info is only the header banner ("Free Shipping On Orders Over $150"); no delivery-estimate module on PDP. Strengths noted: Find My Size + full size chart, "Pairs Well With" 5-item cross-sell.

Why it matters: Reviews and pre-checkout BNPL messaging are two of the most reliable conversion levers in enterprise DTC — both absent here at a $115–$145 ask.

D

Cart & Checkout

40/100 · weight 15%
  • Empty cart reads "You have no items in your cart." — no Continue Shopping CTA, no recommended products, no promo-code field, no payment logos rendered. A dead end. Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • /checkout redirects straight to the empty cart page; guest-checkout availability and express-pay options could not be observed without an in-stock item — verify live.
  • The $150 free-shipping threshold sits above the $115–$145 single-polo price point — a deliberate 2-item AOV lever with no progress-bar merchandising observed.

Why it matters: The cart is where hesitation compounds. A cart with no recovery paths, no reassurance, and no nudge toward the free-ship threshold leaves the two cheapest AOV levers unpulled.

C

Email / SMS Capture

60/100 · weight 10%
  • Footer capture exists: "Sign me up for the mailing list to receive the latest news, product drops & offers"no incentive attached. No % off, no welcome offer. Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • SMS program is live (text JOIN, STOP to 27348) and its terms list back-in-stock and loyalty coupon message types — but state no signup incentive. Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • Waitlist capture on OOS PDPs is present — with this much OOS inventory, back-in-stock is likely their biggest email trigger. Whether a welcome popup exists is JS-invisible to our fetch method — verify live in a fresh session.

Why it matters: Incentivized welcome flows typically drive a meaningful share of DTC email revenue. Capture with no offer under-fills the top of that entire retention engine (full program: see the Email module).

B-

Trust & Policy

75/100 · weight 10%
  • Genuinely strong asset: 30-day returns with a free pre-paid FedEx label — and it is not merchandised anywhere on the PDP. Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • Refunds take "14–21 business days" (~4 calendar weeks) vs. the 5–10 day DTC norm; original shipping not refunded.
  • Exchanges: same category, same price only; replacement ships only after the original reaches the warehouse — no instant exchange.
  • Final sale / clearance is non-returnable — real friction while a sitewide "Up To 50% Off" banner runs.
  • help.sundayred.com displayed a "read only version" / offline-status notice at fetch time. Site crawl, Aug 2026

Why it matters: They already paid for the best trust asset in apparel — free returns — and get zero conversion credit for it because shoppers never see it at the decision point.

C

Content Ops

60/100 · weight 5%
  • Gift-cards page still promotes "Father's Day | The gift he'll actually use" — fetched August 1, 2026, roughly 7 weeks after Father's Day. Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • Gift-card purchase is shipped off-domain to sundayred.cashstar.com — a brand and UX discontinuity on a premium storefront.

Why it matters: A luxury-positioned brand telegraphing seven-week-old seasonal copy signals an unattended store — the opposite of the obsessive-detail brand story on the label.

B

SEO Hygiene

80/100 · weight 20%
  • Clean, sane SFCC robots.txt (blocks faceted params, pagination, search, pipeline URLs) with sitemap declared. Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • Sitemap index: 3 child sitemaps, lastmod same-day fresh (auto-generated daily). Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • Keyword-targeted PLP titles ("Men's Polo Shirts | Golf Polos | Sun Day Red") and meta descriptions present.
  • JSON-LD not verified (our fetch method strips head markup) — and with zero reviews, AggregateRating star rich-results are impossible regardless. hreflang for the UK/CA storefronts also unverified. Verify both live.

Why it matters: The technical base is solid — which makes the conversion-layer gaps the bottleneck, not the platform. Full search strategy: see the SEO + AIEO module.

Performance

Pending — run live in the meeting
  • PageSpeed Insights API returned HTTP 429 (rate-limited) on all 5 attempts (mobile ×3, mobile+category ×1, desktop ×1) during the audit session. PSI API, Aug 2026
  • No performance score, CrUX field data, or lab metrics were obtainable — we do not invent Core Web Vitals numbers.
  • Live-meeting plan: run pagespeed.web.dev on the homepage and /men/tops/polos/, mobile + desktop, on screen. If CrUX LCP/INP fail, performance jumps to a top-2 priority.

Why it matters: Mobile speed is a direct conversion input. We would rather grade it live in front of you than guess.

Page-by-Page Teardown

What we saw. What it costs. The fix.

Verbatim evidence from each step of the funnel — and for every step, the rebuilt version already exists in our store concept. Thumbnails below are hotlinked from sundayred.com as visual evidence.

Sun Day Red 2026 homepage marquee
Live 2026 homepage marquee (hotlinked evidence)
Tiger Woods legacy campaign imagery
Brand campaign photography — world-class assets, under-used

What we saw

"The Season End Sale: Up To 50% Off Select Styles | Shop Now"

  • Title "Sun Day Red by Tiger Woods"; meta: "Performance apparel for those who share Tiger's passion for competing, on & off the course." Site crawl, Aug 2026
  • First commercial message on a luxury-positioned brand is a sitewide discount banner, paired with "Free Shipping On Orders Over $150 *See Details".
  • No email signup form or popup detected in rendered content (popups are JS-triggered and invisible to our fetch — verify live in incognito).

What it costs them

  • ~68% of all organic traffic lands on this one page (~69K visits/mo) Semrush, Jul 2026 — and its first impression is a clearance rack, not the most valuable athlete brand in golf.
  • If no welcome offer fires (verify live), the largest single audience on the site leaves uncaptured.

The fix

  • Lead with brand cinema — their own campaign photography — with the sale as a secondary lane, not the headline.
  • Incentivized capture ("Join the 15" early-access concept) above the fold of the footer.
  • We rebuilt this page — see store/index.html.

The Ranked Fix List

Twelve fixes, ranked by revenue impact.

Impact is banded High / Medium with the evidence-tied reasoning shown — we do not fabricate uplift percentages before we have your analytics baseline. The full test program built on this list lives in the CRO module.

Practice is where majors are won.
The store is the practice tee.

"Every seam, every stitch" is the standard on the label. This audit is the same standard applied to the funnel — because the brand that grinds details on the shirt should never lose a sale to an empty cart page.

Sources & Methods

Every claim, receipted.

Observed sources (Aug 1, 2026)

  • sundayred.com rendered-page fetches: homepage, /men/tops/polos/, /icon-polo-ii/L1243114.html, /cart, /checkout, /giftcards/, /returns/, /klarna.html, /mobile-messaging-program.html, /robots.txt, /sitemap_index.xml
  • help.sundayred.com (read-only / offline notice captured)
  • Klarna — official Sun Day Red store page (Pay in 4 confirmation)
  • Semrush, US database, July 2026 data month (traffic and page-level figures)
  • Product and campaign imagery hotlinked from sundayred.com's own CDN as visual evidence

Method caveat: fetches render pages to text and strip <head> markup — head-dependent items are listed at right, not guessed at.

Verify live in the meeting

  • Core Web Vitals — pagespeed.web.dev on / and /men/tops/polos/, mobile + desktop (API was rate-limited all session)
  • On-site search — "polo", "hoodie", "xyzabc" zero-results test (robots-blocked to crawlers)
  • Welcome popup / first-visit offer (fresh incognito, mobile + desktop)
  • Guest checkout + express pays (Apple Pay / PayPal) with an in-stock item
  • Cart promo field + recommendations with items in cart; sticky ATC behavior
  • JSON-LD (Product / Offer / AggregateRating) via view-source; hreflang for UK/CA storefronts
  • Brand webfonts + CSS (DevTools → Network)
