Module 06 — Google Ads under STAOS

Search demand is bought daily.
Right now, rivals are buying yours.

Sun Day Red already runs Google Ads — a lean, branded-defense program. The opportunity isn't "turn ads on." It's rebalancing a ~$5K/mo defensive footprint into a structured brand + non-brand + Shopping engine, while Rhoback buys the category's shelf space at $1.35 a click.

Where they are

The current paid footprint: defense, no offense

Semrush shows an active, competently run branded-defense program — plus light conquesting of Malbon, Primo and Macade. What it doesn't show: a single non-branded category keyword. Not "golf polo." Not "golf shirts." Not "golf hoodie." Semrush, Jul 2026

The 90% retreat

Estimated Google Ads spend fell from ~$43–60K/mo in Feb–Mar 2025 to ~$5.2K/mo in Jul 2026 — a ~90% pullback. Paid clicks fell from ~32K/mo to ~9.8K/mo. The program didn't fail; it was wound down to defense-only while organic reach was also contracting (see the SEO module). Semrush, Jul 2026

Whatever the internal reason — budget shift, agency change, ROAS doubt — the net effect is the same: the brand exited the category auction just as competitors leaned in. Actual spend and the reason behind the pullback: verify live in the meeting.

Meanwhile: Rhoback is conquesting the category — and the brand

Rhoback runs an est. ~$17K/mo on 213 paid keywords: position 1 on "golf shirts" (49.5K/mo, $1.35), "golf shirts for men" (12.1K), "mens golf shirts" (9.9K), "golf attire," "golf belts" — plus conquesting "peter millar" (201K/mo) at positions 2–4. Semrush, Jul 2026

And the brand term itself is under pressure: "tiger woods sunday red" carries a $3.09 CPC with 0.99 competition density — someone is bidding that term up. Branded defense is justified, and at $0.38 on the head term, it's cheap insurance. Semrush, Jul 2026

Honest framing: Sun Day Red is not invisible on Google. It owns its branded SERP and defends it. The gap is 100% of the non-branded category — where the CPCs are cheap ("golf shoes" $0.47, "golf hoodie" $1.23 at KD 10) and the volume is 10–70× the brand's own search demand. Semrush, Jul 2026

Why it matters

Defends a $3.09-CPC contested brand term with $0.38 core-term clicks; keeps conquesting rivals below the fold. LP: store/index.html (concept).

Negatives strategy

Shared negative lists applied account-wide from day one, expanded weekly by query mining:

freecheapdiscount codecouponusedfake / replica / dupecostumejobs / careerswallpaper / logo pngsunday red car (non-apparel intents)size chart (route to brand camp only)women's terms → until women's LPs exist
STAOS · 2Tracking — measure before you spend

No scale decision gets made on broken data. Week 1 of the pilot is a measurement build, not a media launch.

Conversion plumbing

  • Enhanced Conversions — hashed first-party email/phone passed on purchase; recovers conversions browsers drop. Implemented via gtag or SFCC tag layer.
  • Primary conversion: Purchase (Google Ads tag, order-value with cart contents). Secondary (observation): Add to Cart, Begin Checkout, Email signup.
  • GA4 linked, not double-counted: GA4 key events imported for audience building only; the Ads tag remains the bidding conversion source.
  • Consent Mode v2 — required for EEA/UK traffic and future-proofing; behavioral modeling fills consent gaps.

UTM taxonomy & dedup rules

One taxonomy across Google, Meta and Klaviyo (see Email module):

utm_source=google
utm_medium=cpc
utm_campaign=sdr_search_nonbrand_polos
utm_content=rsa_icon115
utm_term={keyword}

  • Dedup: transaction ID passed on every purchase tag — one order, one conversion, regardless of tag count.
  • Attribution: data-driven attribution in Ads; MER (blended) is the executive scoreboard so platform-reported ROAS can never overclaim (see Analyze).
  • Audit first: current tag health is unknown from outside — account + GTM audit on access, week 1.
STAOS · 3Analyze — the KPI stack and the calendar

ChannelGoogle Ads ROAS — reported split brand vs non-brand, alwaysWeekly
CampaignNon-brand CPA / ROAS by ad group; Shopping ROAS by collection label2×/week
QuerySearch-term N-gram report; impression share on target termsWeekly

Brand-defense ROAS will always look heroic — it captures demand the brand already owns. It is reported separately so it can never subsidize the non-brand story. That honesty is the whole point of the split.

Golf runs on a calendar. So should the budget.

Flighting tied to the majors — the moments the brand's own ad copy already targets ("Augusta rewards those who study it," "Summer Championship"). Semrush, Jul 2026

AprMasters week — peak flight, Tiger-adjacent + gifts up
MayPGA Championship — sustain
JunU.S. Open + Father's Day — "golf gifts for men" (8.1K/mo, $0.55) flight

Nov–DecHoliday — Shopping/PMax max, gifting RSAs
STAOS · 4Optimize — the weekly operating system

Query mining cadence

  • Weekly (weeks 1–6): full search-term review; converting queries promoted to exact; waste → negatives.
  • Bi-weekly (week 7+): N-gram analysis to catch pattern-level waste ("cheap", "womens", non-US intents).
  • PMax search-term insights reviewed weekly; brand exclusions verified monthly.

Kill / scale thresholds Illustrative

  • Kill: keyword spends 2× target CPA with zero conversions → pause; ad group at <0.5× target ROAS over 14 days → rebuild or cut.
  • Scale: ad group beats target ROAS over 14 days with ≥80% impression share headroom → +20% budget steps.
  • Thresholds are set against the real target CPA/AOV once account data is in hand — these are placeholders, not promises.

Budget reallocation rules

  • Brand defense is capped at lost-IS <5% — it never absorbs growth budget.
  • Winner-take-more: monthly, bottom-decile spend moves to the top-performing non-brand ad group.
  • Seasonal override: majors-week flights pre-committed in the calendar, not improvised.

Landing-page mapping

Ads are only half the click. The store concept pages in this pitch are the LP standard we'd hold the real site to — fast, premium, in-stock-first merchandising.

STAOS · 5Scale — prove ROAS at $10K, then earn the next tier

  • Unlocks: pants/shorts ad groups (45K combined monthly searches), structured conquest vs Rhoback's positions, RSA iteration program, Merchant Center promotions.
  • Milestones: impression-share targets on "golf polos"/"golf shirts"; non-brand revenue becomes a weekly board line. Illustrative

Tier 3 — Category leadership

BrandNon-brandShopping/PMaxYouTube / Demand Gen
  • Unlocks: YouTube + Demand Gen against the golf-content audience (see Next Gen module), "golf shoes" (90.5K/mo) contested seriously, geo-based incrementality testing.
  • Milestones: majors-week share-of-voice plan; brand-search lift measured as a KPI of non-brand investment. Illustrative

This is roughly the spend level the brand already operated at in early 2025 (~$43–60K/mo est.) — the difference is structure: back then the est. spend was overwhelmingly branded; the tiers above buy net-new demand. Semrush, Jul 2026

Practice weeks win nothing.
Sunday is for closing.

The pilot is the practice round: 90 days, $10K a month, every number verified. Then we play the weekend — with a category the competition thinks it already bought.

Verify live in the meeting

  • Semrush ≠ actual account data. All spend, click and CPC figures are modeled estimates. Actual budgets, ROAS, conversion tracking health and the reason for the 2025 spend pullback require a Google Ads account audit on access — we run it in week 1.
  • Zero non-branded paid keywords is a Semrush observation — confirm against live SERPs and the account's keyword list.
  • Kill/scale thresholds and milestone timings are illustrative until calibrated to real CPA/AOV data.
